The Rwenzori Mountains — known as the "Mountains of the Moon" since Ptolemy's ancient maps — are among Africa's most spectacular and rewarding trekking destinations. Their perpetual snowfields, glaciers, and unique afroalpine vegetation are unlike anything on the continent.

The Central Circuit Trek takes 7–8 days through giant heathers, lobelias, and moss-draped valleys to the summit at Margherita Peak (5,109m). Shorter day hikes are also available for those wanting a taste of the mountain wilderness.
